Singkamas | A Filipino-inspired floral exploration

A little break from flowers, and a little love letter to singkamas.

We've always loved eating singkamas, especially when it's cold. Juicy, crunchy, and naturally sweet, it's one of those familiar things that feels like home.

For this exploration, we wanted to take something wonderfully ordinary and look at it differently: Can a humble kitchen staple become part of a floral-inspired artwork?

Rooted in Filipino warmth, harvest, and home, Beyond Blooms explores the idea that beauty doesn't always have to come from flowers. Sometimes, inspiration grows from the kitchen too.

This piece is part of Unwrapped's Floral Exploration Series, an ongoing creative practice where we explore flowers, unexpected materials, textures, and forms beyond traditional floral design.

A floral structure inspired by a dish, a culture, and a part of home.

As a learner at SoFA Design Institute, I was challenged to create a floral structure with a Filipino soul—a piece that went beyond aesthetics and explored meaning, identity, and culture through floral design.

The brief immediately brought me back to my roots.

I am a Bicolana, and when I think of Bicol, I think of food—the flavors I grew up with, the ingredients familiar in our kitchens, and the dishes that carry a sense of home.

One of those dishes is Laing.

Instead of simply creating something that looked Filipino, I wanted to create something that felt personal to me. I chose to interpret Laing through floral art, transforming familiar ingredients into an unexpected floral structure.

For the piece, I used dried gabi leaves, niyog, sili, bawang, sibuyas, and luya, paired with Phalaenopsis orchids as the main floral element.

The familiar ingredients became symbols of home and Bicolano identity, while the orchids created a contrast between the everyday and the refined.

The result was a floral composition that brought together food, memory, culture, and design.

PULO is our Filipino-Korean inspired wedding styling concept, created to explore how culture, nature, and storytelling can come together in a wedding tablescape.

Inspired by the Korean meadow style of floral arranging, we combined its natural, garden-like movement with local Philippine flowers, foliage, and familiar ingredients such as sitaw, ampalaya, puso ng saging, saging, native kalabasa, shimeji mushrooms, carrots and lemon.

The vegetables were chosen intentionally. Each one carries a simple story connected to marriage—growth, nourishment, abundance, resilience, patience, and gratitude. Even the carrots were naturally shaped into a little finger heart, adding a playful expression of love to an otherwise unexpected element.
